We began by discussing different characters that you would find in a story and what different traits might make up a character.The girls  then began to create their own character using clay.

As they worked in clay they thought about the person they were creating and tried to build up information on that person.

The characters were given names and painted.

The girls painted portraits of their characters,

They continued to discuss and build up on ideas based around their character.

The girls then began to write their stories based on the character that they had created. Each girl made a book for their story. I printed out the titles  and  the authors name for each of the books.

We then invited their parents in to help design the cover of the books and the girls took turns reading their stories to their parents and the class.

The children began this project by examining themselves carefully using mirrors and drawing themselves, including as much detail as possible using 2B, 4B and 6B pencils.

Each child then had to choose coloured paper that matched their skin colour,eye colour and hair colour as closely as possible.

Using scissors they cut out their face in light card and slowly built up all their features using differently coloured card. This was a very big task for the children as they really had to think about the shapes they needed in order to create their own self portrait.  The likeness to themselves that was achieved was fantastic.

The children then worked on a large background to display their class together. They mixed colours using paint to create a frame.

Then we put everyone together as a group.

In the school I came across some large old roller blinds that were out of use. Ms Kearney had been looking at the work of Mondrian with the children. We cleared the classroom floor and using masking tape myself and the children masked off large sections of the blind, dividing it up into a series of rectangles and squares. Then the children mixed up colours of their choice and painted in the individual areas.

The children were thrilled by the scale of the work. Once the paint had dried the children worked directly on to the blind with oil pastels.

Then we removed the masking tape.

The blind was then displayed at the end of the corridor, It has been given a complete new lease of life and may even be reused and hung back up at the window.

Class: 6th class

Teacher: Ms. Ryan

School: Mater Dei.

While 6th class were studying the Greeks they read ” Pandoras Box” an ancient Greek fable.In this story the box was filled with darkness and gloom, the girls decided to make their own version of Pandora Box but to fill it instead with hope and dreams for their futures. we started with templates of cubes and pyramids which the girls decorated and assembled. Gradually the boxes began to take on an apperance of miniture houses so the girls used coloured straws to transform them into miniture buildings and towers.

The boxes began to take on the appearance of miniture homes on stilts.

The girls privately wrote down their hopes and dreams for their future and placed the notes inside the box before gluing shut.

When finished the girls decided that they would like to display them for the rest of the school to see. Using black sugar paper they created a backdrop for their miniture dream buildings. They also used the space to write one word, a trait or something that they felt was important to them. They incorporated this word into their finished design.

We then displayed all the finished work at the main lobby of the school.

The girls from 6th class were studying the ancient Greeks, We spent some time looking at pottery from this era on the interactive whiteboard. The girls then made their own Greek inspired pottery using coiling and pinch pot techniques.

Once air dried the girls painted them.

Spring

Our Theme in third class was Spring. It was already in the air in the classroom as the children had grown tulips and daffodils. They started with observing flowers and we look at the flower paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe.

We began by exploring lots of ways to cut, bend, and fold paper.

Then the children created their own flowers using the techniques they had explored.

Nests.

We looked at old nests to see what they are made of. There was dries grass, moss, feathers, clay, hair, twigs and leaves. The children collected their own nesting materials and built nests.

Birds

The children wanted to make birds for their nest. They were very excited the following week when I brought in lots of fabric and needles, pins and threads.I showed them how to make a pattern for their birds. There was great enthusiasm. Only three children had ever seen anyone sew before.

We used old pillows for the stuffing and added feathers, buttons , pipe cleaners and beads to complete the birds.

Parents and Children learn from each other.

Parents were invited to join the children in a session to make baby birds to complete the Spring nests.

Teacher Mr. O’Donovan.

This class had 5 weeks of Creativity in the Classroom and we decided to prepare for their confirmation. We began by exploring our names. The children tried writing their names in different ways and found out from their parents why they got their christian names.We had very interesting stories behind each name.

The class and teacher wanted something that they could continue to work on and could go into the church for their confirmation ceremony.I decided that we could use individual cardboard boxes that would look good as individual art works and also make a large sculpture when all the boxes are put together. Every child will have their own piece of art to keep to remind them of their Confirmation.

We began with self portraits.

When we put the boxes together they looked like a dove cote. As the dove is a symbol for the Holy Spirit each child made a dove for their box in clay.

The children cut out windows in the boxes and used coloured cellophane to change the light in the boxes.

.

The teacher and children continue to add ideas to the boxes. These will be displayed in the church on the day of their confirmation.

Afterwards each child will bring their box home to treasure forever.
