Here are photographs from the 4 classes in Loreto Senior and Loreto Junior Crumlin who had 8 sessions of Creativity in the Classroom starting the first week in September and finishing during the first week of November 2018.

The classes were senior infants and first class in Loreto Junior, Crumlin

Two fifth classes in Loreto Crumlin Senior.

I decided that we would focus on plants for the first three sessions, as we had planned to bring each class group to visit the Sculpture in Context at the Botanic Gardens on the fourth session.

I began by bringing in plants from my garden, fields and woods. We explored them using all our senses. Each table got plants with different colours, textures, shapes, forms, smells and tastes. The children were encouraged to touch, look,(with magnifying glasses) smell and taste (where appropriate). There was a lot of excitement especially when insects emerged from some of the plants. The children were encouraged to care for the insects and eventually they settled down.

In pairs senior infants and first class were asked to collect as many coloured leaves as they could find in the school garden. Then each child was asked to bring back to the classroom leaves that they liked the shape and pattern of. They made lots of drawings of these.

The two fifth classes, explored shape, colour and symmetry by making Hapa Zome prints on to fabric. Hapa Zome is the Japanese art of pounding natural pigment from plants into cloth.

The junior school children noticed that the colours in leaves blended together so we did some painting, mixing colours and blending one colour into another.

We looked at some photographs of the paintings of the American artist Georgia O’Keeffe and tried to imagine what the real paintings look like when you see how big they are. We noticed how she mixes and blends her colours.

The children were given flowers to observe.

The junior school used paper collage to create big flowers and then painted them.

I added some more natural materials to each class’s collection, conkers, disks of wood with holes, bamboo, elder sticks, ivy vines, and willow sticks.

We observed the differences in the wood – hollow bamboo, bendy ivy vines and willow, and the soft pith in the elder.

Using wire and pliers they made constructions.

To prepare for the week when parents were invited to participate in the project with their children the children made some leaf rubbings with white candle wax and blended and mixed washes of paint over them.

Parents and Children’s Session

parent:child

I showed a slide show of all the work the children had made. The children described to their parents what they had been doing.

This was the week before the Halloween holidays so everyone made autumn masks.

The children showed their parents different ways to make leaves- drawing from observation, drawing around the shape and rubbings. They also added the leaves they made the previous week.

The children designed gardens using paper construction for the final session. They worked in groups. It was lovely to observe them discussing their ideas, helping each other and sharing.
